About this Course

Anxiety and fear are unavoidable lifetime companions. This course will give you everything you need to know to bring these challenging states onto the path of psychological and spiritual growth. If you can relate to anxiety and fear properly, they actually accelerate your development. Using teachings and practices from modern psychology and ancient Buddhist and Hindu spirituality, you will never experience anxiety and fear in the same way again.

This course takes each word in the title and unpacks it, offering contemplations and meditations that will change the way you relate to any unwanted experience. What does it mean to work with anxiety and fear? How can I learn to relate to it instead of from it? Working with anxiety and fear is what brings them onto the path, so working with are central players in this course. What do these challenging states have to teach us?

By exploring the nature of anxiety and fear you can better understand these lifetime partners, and transform your relationship to them. Anxiety and fear are incredibly important on the spiritual path, and armed with the proper tools, spiritual warriors go directly into them to transform them into opportunities for awakening.

Uncertainty is actually the nature of relative reality, and learning how to work with groundlessness and insecurity are essential to life, and especially to the spiritual path. Finally, what exactly is the world? Does it exist independently of me “out there,” or is it a projection of what’s “in here.” Do I grow into a pre-existing objective world, or with a subjective world that I co-create?

What's Inside This Course

Session One - Introduction and Overview (Free Preview)

This section presents the central narratives of the course:

  1. Engaging the tantric and alchemical traditions to transform obstacle into opportunity.
  2. The importance of Right View from an absolute and relative perspective.
  3. “Outsider” vs “Insider” – how we lose our way when we only focus outside of ourselves.
  4. Waking up vs waking down – the importance of body on the path.
  5. The power of spiritual reductionism – the discovery that everything boils down to spiritual issues.

Includes Modules On:

  • Transformation Through Obstacles and Challenges
  • The Natural Wisdom of Our Bodies
  • Deconstructing Secondary Emotions
  • Simplicity and Complexity
  • Q & A

Session Two - Bardo Principles and Referential Mindfulness

You will learn how the bardo teachings of Tibetan Buddhism are uniquely situated to help us work with fear and anxiety. Andrew explains how, regarding the COVID situation, we are in a bardo now. He reviews how our inability to relate to uncertainty causes us to panic, why we contract out of fear, and to transform it into a precious opportunity to work with our minds.

Includes Modules On:

  • The Bardo Teachings and Fear
  • Contemplation and Meditation on Fear
  • Waking Down
  • Contemplation on Hardship and One Breath Meditation
  • Hit the Mute Button Contemplation
  • Meditation in Three Phases
  • The Art of Working with Emotion (Chapter from Andrew’s book, “The Power & the Pain”)
  • Q & A

Session Three - Conceptual Proliferation and Thought Construction

Andrew explores how viral and contagion principles as our defaults unconsciously predisposes us to relate from unwanted states of mind, a relationship that leads to unskillful actions. We explore three levels of contagion (physical, psychological, and social), the notion of self-liberation, and ego’s love for narrative immersion.

Includes Modules On:

  • Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Contagions
  • How We Create the World
  • Meditation on Proliferation of Thoughts
  • Application of the Four Arts (Chapter from Andrew’s book, “The Power & the Pain”)
  • Q & A

Session Four - Digesting Unfinished Energy Patterns

Andrew introduces the concept of samskara (deposited impression), from both the Buddhist and Hindu perspectives. Samskaras are what trigger us. Until we bring these unconscious processes into the light of consciousness, they work backstage to affect everything we do in our seemingly “conscious” lives.

Includes Modules On:

  • Death's Link to Anxiety & Fear
  • Anatomy of the Subtle Body
  • Spiritual Practice & Warriorship
  • Meditation - The Practice of Open Awareness
  • Q & A

Session Five - Amazement and Anxiety

You will learn how the attitude of camatkara, or amazement/wonder, is what helps us devour any experience, purifying samskaras and becoming less reactive and more equanimous. Working with (rather than against) our experience is then explored, along with the importance of developing loving-kindness towards ourselves.

Includes Modules On:

  • Going Beyond Preference
  • The Illusory Nature of Self
  • Contemplation on Anxiety
  • The Mistake of Ego (Chapter from Andrew’s book, “The Power & the Pain”)
  • Q & A

Session Six - Bringing Anxiety onto the Path

You will learn the difference between anxiety and fear: anxiety is an immediate response to a possible threat; fear is an immediate response to an immediate threat. If we don’t relate to the immediate experience of anxiety, it transforms into subtle but chronic anxiety. By trying to avoid it we paradoxically throw into the center of our being, where it exerts an unconscious but powerful effect on everything we do.

Includes Modules On:

  • The Difference Between Anxiety & Fear
  • Binding Anxiety
  • Anxiety and Fear as the Path
  • Open Awareness Meditation
  • Contemplation on Darkness
  • Contemplation on Contraction
  • Q & A

Session Seven - Transforming Fear

We continue our exploration of fear, its etymology, phenomenology, and sociology. What exactly is fear? Where is this fear? How do we spend our lives avoiding it? Why is fear so contagious, and so easily marketed? And most importantly, how can we work with it? When properly understood, fear is the “fare” for growth, and a powerful indicator (along with anxiety) of where we need to go to grow.

Includes Modules On:

  • Welcoming Anxiety & Fear
  • Fear and Ignorance
  • Growth Through Fear
  • Contemplation on Equality
  • Contemplation - Holding Fear and Anxiety
  • Fear is the Fare (Chapter from Andrew’s book, “The Power & the Pain”)
  • Q & A

Session Eight - Wholesome Fear and the Power of Projection

Andrew introduces an integral approach to fear and how we can relate with fear in healthy ways, and understand the evolutionary role of fear. He explains the interdependence between contraction, fear, and ego. We will explore how fear defends form (body), and ego is exclusive identification with form. This is why understanding fear is so critical on the path. Andrew also addresses working with uncertainty, by first discovering that uncertainty is the nature of relative reality. Fear and anxiety are not inherent in the world; they are secondary constructs based on how we co-create the world.

Includes Modules On:

  • Integral Theory
  • Overcoming Fear
  • Contemplation: Going into Fear
  • Becoming Unconditionally Happy
  • Contemplation on Certainty
  • Contemplation - Going Directly into Fear
  • Q & A
